The Austro-American Society in Austria
We promote the dynamic and deep ties between Upper Austria
and the United States.
We bring together Austrians and Americans and other
English-speaking people to assist them in making friends. We come together
to learn about our cultures, maintain lively exchanges and have fun.
We create opportunities to practice speaking and listening to
English.
We cooperate on both private and business levels.
We offer a
variety of activities - a weekly English conversation hour, lectures on
topics of current interest, excursions, visits to exhibitions, theater and
concert performances, sports events, a cinema brunch, and more.
We have
regular activities: Thursday Morning Conversation - Exam Preparation and
Conversation Circle for Seniors (Maturanten) - Thanksgiving - Christmas and
Independence Day Celebration.
We offer
help to American and other English-speaking newcomers to settle in this
area. We give them information that will make life more comfortable and
adjusting easier.
The
celebration of the founding of the Austro-American Society took place on
January 6, 1946 in the Musikvereinssaal in Vienna with a music
program of Mozart and Brahms. The opening speech was given by the first
president of the Society, Univ. Prof. Dr. Otto Kauders. The price of the
tickets was "50 Groschen".
Since that
time - a time of Care Packages and aid programs – there have been many
activities in the fields of politics, science, education and culture to
foster better understanding between Austrians and Americans.
On October
15, 1949 a branch of the Austro-American Society was founded in Linz. Dkfm.
Hilda Höferer organized language courses, lectures and a teen club. The
Society had a club room in the America House.
In 2000
the AAS for Upper Austria was reorganized and since that time has been an
independent Society in co-operation with the club in Vienna and the U.S.
Embassy.
In 2003 new officers were elected and they revitalized the club . They could win new members .
In 2008 the officers of
the board retired and new officers were elected .
