Movie goofs: |
||
| There are 29 goofs in Hitchcock's Psycho. Here a few of them
to enjoy. When Marion is driving in the night and camera glances down to see the speedometer you can clearly see the shift lever is in park. Mother stabs Abrogast with a knife. He falls down the stairs and Mother follows him to stab him again but viola!, the knife has no blood on it. When Norman uses a towel to clean the tub it's white. Then in the next scene it dark in color. Finally he throws it into a tub and it's white again. After Marion is murdered the camera pans down her face and you can see her neck is pulsing. When Marion is getting ready for the shower, the camera pans back into her room to look at stuff on the bed and one can clearly see the shadow of the camera on the bed as it moves. When Marion gets to the hotel it's raining and she jumps out of the car with the windshield wipers going and honks the horn. when she comes back to the car a few moments later the wipers are off. |

| Over the years, audiences have noticed many mistakes or "movie
goofs" in Alfred Hitchcock's films. Was it due to the lack of proper
equipment, lighting and props or was it just careless directing? Often,
cameras, lights on the set and other studio equipment could be seen in
reflections on the walls. Shadows appeared on the right, then on the left;
things in the scene disappeared, then reappeared and backgrounds moved
faster than the actors in the scene. Other "bloopers" noted in Hitchcock's films included such things as buttons on clothing buttoned, then unbuttoned; clothing colors changing before your eyes and objects switching from one hand to the other. It's crazy...but there were many! Here are just a few worth noting: 39 Steps: In this movie, Professor Jordan suggested, that Richard Haney commit suicide by making the statement "What if I leave you alone with this revolver?". However, as he was speaking, he was holding a small caliber semi-automatic pistol. Then just before he shot Hanney, his pistol suddenly switched hands. Notorious: There were several mistakes during this movie, starring Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman. When they are sitting at an outdoor caf, the same footage of film is used twice during their discussion. Then, when the two are traveling in a plane, the clouds seem to be going backwards. The Rope: This movie had some real bloopers! In a shot of Jimmy Stewart, a camera pans from an easy chair to the piano. When the camera pans back, the chair is sitting in a different direction. Then Farley Granger cuts his hand on some glass...a few minutes later...there's no blood or any evidence of a cut. We may never know why there were so many mistakes in Alfred Hitchcock's films, or why they continued through the years. It has certainly caused some attention and criticism. However, many Hitchcock movie fans actually enjoy looking for "goofs". |

| If you have a copy of the birds which is one of my favorites
watch it and listen carefully after the school teacher (Actress Susan Plechette)Annie is murdered by the birds and Mitch and Melanie discover her body mitch is supposed to have picked her up and carried her into the house. Well if you listen carefully to the footsteps you can hear two people mitch and the corpse walking off and one person goes up on the porch it is hysterical since it was suppose to be a final act of chivalry in behalf of a deceased ex girl friend I guess the actor good looking Rod Taylor was'nt strong enough to carry her. |

| Probably one of the most notable Hitchcock goofs that
actually got caught before it got onto film was one relayed by Stephen King
in an anecdote in his book On Writing. His wife, Alma, known notoriously as
Hitchcock's toughest critic, was among an audience of people watching an
initial cut of his movie Psycho. While most praised the movie profusely at
the end, Alma sat in stone silence and said finally, "You can't send it out
like that." What she was referring to, and what everyone else including
Hitchcock himself had missed, was a shot from the famous shower scene.
Actress Janet Leigh, when she is supposed to have been dead, swallows in one
of the shots. Other Psycho goofs that did make it past the final cut may have been at the fault of a sloppy continuity editor, or simply allowable given budget and time restrictions. For example, the shower scene also switches between times of cleanliness and other times of being covered in blood. The fact that this seen alone has over 90 splices of film is remarkable; some mistakes were almost to be expected. |

| There are so many mistakes in Alfred Hitchcock's films. I
think it is a little more likely though since he didn't have the resources
the directors and editors have these days. Here are a few I remember from watching The Bird's 1. The birds that attack the schoolchildren have no shadows 2. As the school children are running down the hill a white fence appears between shots in the background Here is a link so you can see all the other mistakes there are in each of his films. There are so many I only remembered the two above, but now i want to go rent them |

| If you want to watch for mistakes in Hitchcock's films you
should rent or buy his earlier films, in which low budgets, and technical
problems, led to numerous errors. My favorite early film, also has may favorite Hitchcock mistake. The Film is, The Lady Vanishes. Hitchcock made it in 1938 and it's one of his most enjoyable early films. It's set almost entirely on a moving train. The plot, without spoilers, is that an elderly lady who has assisted a young woman after she gets a bump on her head, disappears from her seat on the train. Did she ever exist? Or did the young woman simply imagine her as a result of her head injury? Well, the film's whole premise is that you can't vanish on a train. Once you're on it, there's nowhere to go, unless the train stops, and we're told, of course, that it doesn't stop. But here's the mistake. We're shown two shots of the train, and in the second it has more cars on it than in the first! The Lady Vanishes is a film you'll love even if you forget to look for the mistake. And you just might forget, because you'll be so wrapped up in the mystery, and so delighted by Hitchcock's deft touches of humor, that you may not notice the magical addition of the extra rail cars. |

| Obviously it is harder to pick mistakes for this man than
most, as he was the master. I guess I could nitpick and go over some of his
really early films or his more poorly financed ones, but I have chosen to
only list the mistakes made in the classic Hitchcock films we all know and
love. In Rear Window there is one that stands out to me. There are a few little continuity errors that stand out but I know you want something juicier than that, right? How about this: in the first pull camera swing showing the whole apartment area about eight minutes into the film you can see an arc light in a top floor window visibly blow out. Another good one is that the amount of Brandy in the detective's glass in the drinking scene increases between shots! In Vertigo there are also a few fun screwups. The ice cubes in Gavin and Scottie's drinks vanish as they continue talking. Another good one is that when Scottie chases Madeilene up the bell tower, you can see a crew member's hand slip onscreen behind the stairs in the upward shot of Madeleine and it disappears as she walks by. In North by Northwest there are also a few doozies. For one thing, there is a scene where an ambulance comes into the screen and the trees wobble! Another good one is when Thornhill and his mother are changing elevators-there is a crew member in the reflection on the pane of glass. In Psycho there are a couple of obvious mistakes. It is hard to list them since it is such a flawless film but since you asked... In the scene where Norman is carrying Marion's body out of he car the car is wet and dry depending on the shot. Another mistake was that the inside of the bathtub was spotless when Janet Leigh finished dying in it (blood went down the drain) but it is covered in blood when Norman comes in there to clean up. And finally: the shadow of the camera lands on the lady examining the bug spray in Sam's store. I don't blame Hitchcock for much of this. These are mistakes every director makes and even good ones make ten times as many as Hitchcock ever did. This list is just to prove that yes, the greats do mess up sometimes, and no, that does not make them any less great. |
